The grandma of a Brian House patient has raised £400 for The Gazette’s Hospice Heroes campaign by completing a sponsored swim.
Avril Braithwaite managed to complete 78 lengths of the pool at Palatine Leisure Centre - a total of one mile and a quarter.
Her aim was to do a mile.
Avril, 66, said: “I actually got cramp, otherwise I would have been able to carry on and do more lengths.
“At least I did more than I set out to do, but I know I could have done more.”
Avril, of Ash Street, Blackpool, is still waiting for some sponsorship to come through, and says she may reach £500 for our appeal.
Our appeal aims to raise £200,000 for a much needed refurbishment of both Trinity Hospice and Brian House children’s hospice.
The money will be put together with a £280,000 grant from the Department of Health to build more single rooms at Trinity and generally refurbish the 28-year-old building, as well as renovating Brian House to make it brighter and safer for the children who go there.
It comes as one of Avril’ s granddaughters is receiving care at the facility on Low Moor Road, Bispham.
She added: “I wish to thank Palatine Leisure Centre for their support and for letting me use a swimming lane for free
“They have been very good to me.”
