A huge project to redevelop two Wyre gyms is expected to take longer to finish and cost more to do after problems were found with the rooves of both venues.
Wyre Council is investing more than £5.5m in revamping Poulton and Thornton leisure centres.
Thornton’s will include ten pin bowling and a skate park while Poulton will have a state-of-the-art spa.
The council’s cabinet will meet on Wednesday to discuss a proposal to spend a further £130,000 on the Thornton project, after problems were found with the rooves of both properties, off Breck Road, Poulton, and Victoria Road East, Thornton.
The cost of repair work at the Poulton site has not yet been finalised, but £15,000 will be needed to extend the time spent on both developments. This extra £145,000 is to be funded from the council’s capital investment reserve.
Contractors ISG Limited has been undertaking the work since September 2013, since which time an inspection at Thornton found the mixture of eight flat and pitch rooves to be in “poor condition”.
Similarly sections of the roof at Poulton are in “very poor” condition, in particular the section earmarked for the new spa.
