ONE of the Golden Mile’s best known attractions is getting a facelift.
Mr T’s Amusement Arcade on the Promenade is set for improvements including the restoration of its famous rooftop arches, and a makeover of the interior.
The scheme is part of a programme of “substantial investment” by the centre’s operators Crown Leisure.
Operations director Kevin Scott said: “We are investing in the property. There will be external cladding which will be in keeping with all other developments in the area, new signage, doors, decorating, carpets and refurbishing work done.
“The arches above the roof, which have been iconic for a long time, will be restored.
“Mr T’s is a well known building and that corner is a busy area. We are taking advantage of all the investment which has taken place on the Promenade.
“It’s a sign of our confidence and commitment we are making this major investment.
“We believe strongly in the resort and are putting our money where our mouth is.”
Mr Scott would not put a figure on the level of investment but described it as “substantial”.
Mr T’s is part of the Golden Mile Centre which was sold to the council by Leisure Parcs last year as part of the £40m deal which also included the Tower and the Winter Gardens.
Crown Leisure, an off-shoot of Leisure Parcs, continues to operate the venue.
A planning application has been submitted to the council for the external work.
New doors are already in place and the lobby is due to be rejuvenated by the end of this week, with the rest of the internal work due to be completed by the first week in June in time for the main summer season.
The centre is remaining open throughout the work.
Coun Graham Cain, cabinet member for tourism on Blackpool Council, welcomed the investment.
He said: “Mr T’s is in a prime location so it’s good to see investment there.
“We want things put in place which will make Blackpool more attractive for future visitors and the more we can improve especially on the Golden Mile, the better.
“The investment these companies like Crown Leisure and Merlin are making is proving that by working together we are making vast improvements and that’s what we intend to continue to do.”
