A WARD at Blackpool Victoria Hospital is not so much going for gold as going for red white and blue!
Enrolled nurse John Cashman delighted staff and patients on Ward 18 at The Vic by decorating the ward with an Olympic theme and running in carrying his own version of the Olympic torch.
Flags, banners and even decorated towels festoon the ward walls in an honour to Team GB.
He wanted to help bring something of the Olympic spirit to those who didn’t have chance to experience it themselves, because they were in hospital.
Ward sister Karen Hay said the patients had been really enthused by John’s efforts.
She said: “It has created such a good patriotic atmosphere.
“When John ran in carrying the torch all the visitors and patients clapped and cheered.”
The torch – which was handmade by John’s sister – will be auctioned off after the London 2012 Games, with the cash going to the Blue Skies Going for Gold Appeal to raise funds for the Fylde coast’s hospitals.
And keeping the Olympic theme, staff on Wards 18 and 19 are all set for an Olympic bake-off on Saturday, August 11, when prizes will be awarded for the best-decorated cake, best cupcake, best biscuit and overall winner.
