The two friends, aged 11 and 12-years-old, had climbed down a set of metal ladders on Bispham sea front when one of them slipped and fell into the water at around 5pm on Tuesday.

The second girl then jumped in to rescue her friend, which resulted in both youngsters getting into difficulty.

A young boy threw a lifebelt out to the pair, and they were both out of the water by the time crews arrived from Fleetwood Coastguard.

Ambulance services were called to reports of the girls suffering from ‘breathing difficulties’ and they were taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, though a spokesman said they had ‘no obvious injuries’.

A spokesman for HM Coastguard Fleetwood said: “Thanks to all those that assisted with this incident, especially the young man who did the right thing!”
