A teenage girl’s attendance at school slumped to just 40 per cent, Blackpool Magistrates heard.

Diane Evans, 47, of Elizabeth Street, Blackpool admitted knowingly failure to ensure the 15-year-old’s attendance at Unity Academy.

Her husband is no longer with her and she has been left to cope looking after the 15 year old and two grand children

Evans was given a 12 month community order and must do 40 hours unpaid work for the community.

The court heard the girl made just 48 attendances out of a possible 120 and at one stage locked herself in a school toilet rather than go into class.

John McLaren, defending, said: “Her husband is no longer with her and she has been left to cope looking after the 15 year old and two grand children.”
