RETAIL giant Sainsbury’s is to create 400 jobs in Blackpool with the opening of a new supermarket in the town centre.

The grocery chain was today revealed as the operator of the superstore which will anchor the £220m new Central Business District – previously known as the Talbot Gateway.

Work to build the supermarket on the site of the former indoor bowling centre on Lark Hill Street is due to begin next year, with the store set to open in 2013.

Around 70 per cent of the new jobs will be full-time.

Blackpool Council leader Coun Simon Blackburn said: “I know these plans are going to be welcomed by so many Blackpool residents who are keen to see a large supermarket in the town centre.

“Sainsbury’s is exactly the type of big name company we want to attract to Blackpool and the news they are going to employ hundreds of local people is simply fantastic.

“These jobs are in addition to those that will be created for the construction of the council offices and redevelopment of the Talbot Road bus station.”
