DEDICATED community volunteers have had their hard work rewarded with a prestigious award.

Members of Garstang In Bloom were handed the Clean Sweep award for their efforts to keep their market town clean and pristine for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.

The group was honoured by the Royal Horticultural Society’s North West In Bloom for their environmental commitments.

Norah Hoyles, chairman of Garstang in Bloom, said: “This is one of the most prestigious awards – it means our town is litter free.

“We’re all very proud, we have a brilliant team.”

The group spent time ensuring Garstang’s street and public spaces were clean and litter free, to instil pride in the area.

Their work to prevent litter was intended to save unsightly mess as well as protect wildlife from rubbish.

Mrs Hoyles was also honoured with an Outstanding Achievement award for her commitments to community work, at the ceremony on Thursday, October 25.

She added: “It was wonderful to win.

“I’ve been doing Bloom for about 24 years now and we’ve won about 16 or 17 Golds but it’s ongoing.”
