Fleetwood teenager Shannon Green is all smiles after reaching the semi-final of a national beauty pageant.

And the 16-year-old, who is training to work in childcare, is hoping local residents will get behind her to help her reach the grand final of the Miss Teen Great Britain competition, due to take place in October next year in Blackpool.

It’s the first competition I’ve done and it feels great to be through to the semi-finals

Shannon, who is doing an apprenticeship at a Fleetwood nursery, said: “It’s the first competition I’ve done and it feels great to be through to the semi-finals.

“I had seen it advertised a lot and just thought I would give it a go. There are hundreds and thousands of girls who enter the pageant, so I didn’t really think I would get anywhere.

“But I was so happy when I found out I was through to the semi-final.

“If I could reach the finals, it would really be amazing.”

The Miss Teen Great Britain competition aims to be about much more than being a pretty face.

The contest was created to be a positive and confidence-building experience for young girls and teenagers.

The organisers say they intend for the girls to make new friends and the aim is to make each and every contestant feel like a queen.

Charity fund-raising plays a big part of the competition, and Shannon is already planning how she can raise money for the charity Together For Short Lives, which will be supporting Brian House Children’s Hospice here on the Fylde coast.

The former Cardinal Allen pupil said: “I love doing what I can to help, especially to help children and I love working with children.

“I know a few people from Britain’s Got Talent and X Factor, and am organising some charity gigs to take place in the New Year.

“I’m quite a confident person already, but I think contests like this boost your confidence.

“And I am hoping to make new friends through taking part too. I think it’ll be a great experience.”

Shannon’s proud mum Dorothy said: “She hopes to be a positive role-model to other girls, to show them you can do whatever you put your mind to.”
