Fleetwood’s police chief is warning young people in the town to be aware of the potential dangers of taking “legal high” substances.

Inspector Jo Jackson was speaking as a government bill banning legal highs is passing through the House of Lords, spurred by a series of fatalities across the country.

New psychotic substances or legal highs, even if technically legal at this stage, are not necessarily safe

The Psychoactive Substances Bill, once applied by law, will carry a prison sentence of up to seven years for dealing in substances which have a psychoactive effect.

Insp Jackson said whether the drugs are banned or not, people need to be aware of the risks.

She said: “New psychotic substances or legal highs, even if technically legal at this stage, are not necessarily safe. People should not be taking them as they generally have no idea what they contain.”
