TOURISM chiefs today hailed the opening night of Blackpool’s World Fireworks Championships a massive success after it pulled in 60,000 people.
The Canadian team opened the event on Friday night with a spectacular display – with the French team set to wow spectators this weekend.
The warm weather helped swell the crowds and organisers are hoping for another bumper turn out this Friday.
Natalie Wyatt, managing director of Marketing Blackpool, described the Canadian display as “absolutely world class”.
She said: “Tens of thousands of people poured into Blackpool for the event and I think everybody will have been dazzled by the spectacle on show.
“The work that goes into these pyrotechnical displays really is amazing and it is jaw dropping when you see just what is created.
“It is a wonderful event to have during the Illuminations season and I’m delighted that so many people come time and time again to witness Blackpool’s spectacular free events.
“This Friday we are looking forward to the display from the French team and I am sure that, yet again, spectators will enjoy a splendid evening.”
Crowds can expect to see another dazzling showcase by the French pyrotechnical team, Brezac Artifices, which will hope to showcase the best in innovation by their fireworks designers.
Spectators can watch the show for free between the Tower Festival Headland and North Promenade, with the fireworks being launched from North Pier in front of the backdrop of the Blackpool Illuminations.
Next week will see Australia, last year’s winners, make their bid to maintain the title, before British Pyrotechnical experts, Kimbolton Fireworks, close the competition with another glittering display on Friday, September 28.
The winner will be announced after the final display.
