Firefighters tackle takeaway blaze

FIRE crews battled a fierce blaze at a Blackpool take-away in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Six fire engines from Forest Gate fire station and an aerial ladder platform were used to tackle the fire at Turkish Kebab House, which started just before 5am at the Church Street restaurant.

At first firefighters were worried people may have been trapped inside the building, but no-one was discovered once they got in.

Station manager Robert Martin said smoke and flames were coming from the roof when the team arrived.

He said: “The restaurant side of the property was not actually affected, it was the residential part of the building which is next door.

“The crews were able to put the fire out and all persons were accounted for.”

Station manager Martin said the team was scaled back once the fire was put out.

The main road into the town centre remained closed throughout the morning while firefighters, investigators and police officers worked to find a cause of the fire.
