The £275,000 appeal to help fund a new inshore lifeboat for Lytham St Annes has received its biggest single donation yet.

A cheque for £1,135 was presented to the RNLI by the Rowse family of St Annes, who have long been supporters of the charity.

The money, which has taken the appeal total so far over the £11,000 mark, is the proceeds of a series of raffles held last year during whisky tasting events held locally by the family business Executive Tastings.

The raffles held by Andy and Christine Rowse have generated thousands of pounds for the RNLI since they established he business a decade ago and Andy said: “It is a really important cause and we are delighted to do all we can to help.”

Gary Bird, coxswain at the Lytham St Annes boathouse, said the RNLI was grateful to have such keen and dedicated supporters who were helping to save lives at sea by their contributions.

“Every year for 10 years, they have just quietly passed a cheque over without seeking any thanks for their efforts but this year they were persuaded by the station to visit the boathouse to formally hand the donation over.

“They have already starting fund-raising for next year’s cheque and it was good to be able to show the family over the Mersey class lifeboat Her Majesty The Queen as a small thank you for all they have done over the years.”

In 2018, the current all-weather Mersey class lifeboat Her Majesty The Queen is set to be replaced by £2.2m a Shannon class craft, the funding of which will come largely from the legacy of Miss Barbara Anne Cameron Roberts from Winchester.

She was a long-term supporter of the charity who died in 2013 and the new craft is set to be named Barbara-Anne in her honour.

The £275,000 appeal is intended to help the RNLI meet the shortfall.
