Counting is set to start after polling stations closed at 10pm in today’s historic EU referendum.

Sealed ballot boxes were transported to counts being held at Blackpool Sports Centre, the Marine Hall in Fleetwood and Lytham YMCA for Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde boroughs.

Votes, including thousands of postal votes, must be verified before an army of counters gets to work.

Councils anticipated a high turnout with local results expected to be declared between 3am and 4am.

The national result will be announced at breakfast time at Manchester Town Hall.
