BLACKPOOL is famed as a colourful resort – so perhaps it is no surprise residents are in the top 10 most tanned in the country.

The resort has come second place in the search for the self-tan capital of the UK.

Alderley Edge in Cheshire narrowly beat the resort to the top spot while Romford in Essex ranked below Blackpool in a list released by Tesco.

The supermarket giant used sales figures for self-tan products from its Tesco Extra stores to compile the list.

Staff and students on the Health, Beauty and Related Therapies course at Blackpool and The Fylde College were not surprised by the findings.

Amanda Hamer, a member of staff at the college, said: “Blackpool is a glamorous town and people like to look the part to match the big shows that come to town.”

Sarah Johnson, manager at Sundays Tanning and Beauty Rooms in Layton, explained brides, bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and even grooms are often in search of a healthy glow for their big day.

She added: “Most clients come to look good for a night out or a holiday. We also see a lot of men who don’t want to look pale next to their partners on the beach when they get their bodies out.”

Fake Bake, a company which sells fake tan, said: “Our Blackpool Fake Bake users are among the most loyal in the country. We continue to be grateful to them for wearing their tan with pride.”
