With just 24 hours before judging begins for The Gazette Education Awards, there’s no time to waste in getting your last-minute nominations in.
The awards are back for a third year and will once again celebrate primary and secondary education across Blackpool and the Fylde coast.
There are 15 award categories – one of which is the Sports Achievement Award, sponsored by Blackpool Sixth Form College.
This award will reward an individual or team for excelling in a particular sport or sports at school or through their dedication and commitment outside of school hours.
Connor Bailey, from St Mary’s Catholic College, snapped up last year’s award.
The Marton teenager scooped the prize for being a British National Champion in taekwondo, who has also won the World Mwdo Taekwondo Championships too.
His commitment to training and success in the sport led his headteacher Stephen Tierney to nominate him for his tireless determination and resilience.
Speaking about his win last year, Connor said: “It’s good to do something for my school. They are very supportive of all I do so hopefully I’ve made them, and my family, proud.”
A spokesman for award sponsors Blackpool Sixth Form College said: “Blackpool Sixth is committed to excellence in sports education and to increasing participation in sport.
“The sixth form offers a range of highly successful advanced qualifications in sport for 16 to 19-year-olds from across the Fylde coast.
“These include BTEC Level 3 programmes in Sport as well as A Level PE.
“We also provide sports leader training which has been acknowledged at a national level for its high quality.
“Such is the high standing of the sixth form that both our local league football teams, Blackpool FC and Fleetwood Town, send their apprentices to Blackpool Sixth for the academic side of their training.”
Together with The Gazette, Blackpool Sixth is the organiser of the annual AllStars awards, celebrating youth sport in the Fylde.
So if you know a individual, team or whole school who excel in sport, we want to hear about them.
