A footballing legend and one of Blackpool’s most famous sons officially opened the resort’s first ‘all-through’ school.

Jimmy Armfield unveiled a plaque to mark the official opening of Unity Academy, in North Shore, as it threw open its doors to prospective pupils for an open day.

The academy, which takes children from four years old up to 16, has had a £9.5 million investment to update facilities and buildings on Warbreck Hill Road.

The former England captain and Blackpool FC player, who visited the school on October 11, said: “It’s a brilliant way in which children can start really young, and carry on into higher years within the same school and in the same environment.”

Principal Chris Lickiss said: “It was a huge honour to welcome Jimmy Armfield to Unity Academy. I was delighted to see that he was impressed with what he saw while he was here.”
