Inspirational staff at Blackpool’s Unity Academy continue to earn their stripes as winners of The Gazette’s career aspiration award in the 2013 Education Awards.
The school, in North Shore, scooped first place prize in the category, which sought to celebrate schools’ efforts to guide their pupils towards exciting careers.
Yesterday it continued its efforts to inspire and encourage youngsters during a dedicated careers day.
Staff at the academy are encouraging schools to enter this year’s Education Awards after the win last year spurred on their work.
Sally Radford, careers, education and information guidance co-ordinator at the academy, said: “It was lovely to win and just the boost we needed. It was our first award as Unity Academy.
“On the back of that award we’ve now got a dedicated careers room in school. To receive the award was a good acknowledgement.”
The Gazette is this year holding its fourth annual awards, sponsored by Blackpool and The Fylde College and BAE Systems, to celebrate the best of the Fylde coast’s schools.
The school on Warbreck Hill Drive, formerly Beacon Hill High School, holds an annual careers week for all pupils, from juniors to seniors, to look at career paths.
Now Year Nine pupils are taking on special work experience days, shadowing workers in careers they would like to one day work in.
Ms Radford added: “We just want the best for our pupils.”
The career aspiration award looks for schools that are inspiring young people to develop an understanding of the different career pathways and opportunities open to them.
We are looking for innovative and creative approaches to guiding pupils towards exciting careers.
