Baines Endowed Primary in Marton has been awarded the Basic Skills Quality Mark in Basic Skills (English and maths) and the Primary Geography Quality Mark Silver Award in geography.

Organisers praised staff who they said were “led by a strong and committed senior team, for their daily, very good teaching of basic skills.”

It was just one of 29 schools in the country to achieve the Silver rating in geography.

The report said “teachers ensure policies impact on pupil learning and are not afraid to take risks and innovate and challenge to achieve progress in geography. Key threads through the curriculum are inter-cultural understanding, local fieldwork, environmental issues and dilemmas connected with sustainability.

“These are explored in a variety of places across the world from local to global.

“These schools use creative approaches to stimulate learning and place a high value on using real life issues to promote understanding.”

Headteacher Jo Snape said: “We are absolutely delighted to have achieved both of these awards.

“They are a real reflection of how hard everyone in school has worked and I couldn’t be any prouder of them.

“One award recognises the quality of our work in English and maths, which is obviously important in every school and to every parent but the other recognises excellence in geography which shows our wider curriculum is just as valued.”
