Blackpool NUT secretary Ros Homer (centre) hands over the petition questioning Montgomery High Schools plans to convert to academy status to Chair of Governors Gail Neale, watched by school staff representatives.

ANGRY teachers campaigning against controversial plans to convert their school into an academy have handed over a petition to school chiefs.

More than half of Montgomery High School’s teachers signed the petition, which was handed over to governors yesterday.

The All Hallows Road school in Bispham, is currently consulting staff, governors and parents over plans to become an academy, which would take the school out of local authority control.

Roz Homer, Blackpool National Union of Teachers (NUT) representative, handed over the petition and said: “It was more than half the staff and I’m quite pleased with that.

“We have three teaching unions in the school and Unison for support staff and the four main unions have all signed it.”

The NUT has also organised a public meeting with parents at the Red Lion Pub on Devonshire Road, Bispham, at 7pm on Thursday to allow them to find out more about the consultation for academy status.

The school’s head Simon Brennand said the governors were exploring the issue and would “fully evaluate advantages and disadvantages” during the consultation.
