It has also been a record breaking year for Oxbridge applicants with 16 Newman students being accepted on to their places to study at either Oxford or Cambridge University, studying a wide range of subjects from medicine to languages and economics to maths.

A spokesman for the Lark Hill centre said: “This impressive number comes as little surprise considering Cardinal Newman College is the only Cambridge University Hub for Lancashire, a programme that has proved to be a huge success, with applicants successfully gaining places not only at Oxford and Cambridge, but also at other Russell Group universities, such as Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester.”

She added: “The number of students with successful applications to these prestigious universities has increased year on year since the formation of the Cambridge University Hub and our HE* programme, rising from 260 in 2013/14 to 324 in 2014/15 with figures this year showing almost 400 students have successfully gained a place at one of the UK’s top 24 universities.

“This means that almost 40 per cent of all Cardinal Newman students who are going to university this year will be studying at a Russell Group.”

Principal Nick Burnham said: “The staff and students at Cardinal Newman never fail to impress me with their hard work and it has certainly paid off in spades this year as we have had another incredible set of results.”

He added: “We are immensely proud of all of their achievements.

“Congratulations class of 2016 we wish you every success in the future.”
