A DOG is recovering in an animal shelter after it was found abandoned in a sandwich shop.

Inspectors from the RSPCA picked up the female brindle staffie when it was found by a member of the public locked in a porch on Ashfield Road, Bispham.

Mandi Taylor, a Blackpool RSPCA inspector, said: “The dog was abandoned on one of the coldest days of the year and had she not been found by a member of the public could have been left out in the freezing conditions.

“A person found guilty of an offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 by failing to meet the needs of a protected animal, could face up to six months in prison and a £20,000 fine.”

Mrs Taylor says the dog was in a healthy condition, but looked like it had been bred a number of times by its previous owner before being left.

The dog is to be made available for adoption at the end of the Christmas period and is currently being cared for by Blackpool RSPCA’s Longview Animal Centre on Division Lane.
