A motorist died from major injuries to his head, neck and chest when the car he was driving collided with a tree, an inquest heard.

Blackpool Coroner’s Court was told John Antony Flitcroft, 62, suffered a form of blood clot near an artery close to his heart which caused him to lose control of his blue MG car in November last year.

His car drove across the A583 bypass between Dowbridge and Freckleton Street, near Kirkham, narrowly missing oncoming traffic before hitting a tree at speeds of between 30 to 35mph, according to police.

Mr Flitcroft was pronounced dead at the scene.

Blackpool coroner Alan Wilson was told the former self-employed bedroom fitter had been at Ribby Hall Village in Wrea Green and was driving to his home in Clifton, before the accident happened around 8pm on November 25.

Pathologist Mark Sissons said the 62-year-old had died from multiple skull fractures, a fracture to the neck, damage to his brain and chest injuries.

But after investigating further he found a blood clot near Mr Flitcroft’s heart.

He added: “Above the coronary artery there was a blood clot present.

“When someone has something like this it can cause sudden death, chest pain, cause them to collapse or cause them to become unwell.”

PC Richard Harrison of Blackpool Road Policing said there were no obvious signs why Mr Flitcroft had lost control on the busy A-road.

He added: “Either the driver overcompensated for an unexpected movement or there was an involuntary loss of control due to a medical episode, as the pathologist suggested.”

Blackpool coroner Alan Wilson said Mr Flitcroft had died from injuries to his chest, neck and head, but on the balance of probabilities had lost control of his vehicle after suffering from what he called an acute cardiac event.

He added: “I do not believe his death was prior to impact.

“Although it could have been an acute heart event.

“The medical cause of death was multiple injuries to his head, chest and neck.

“Where driving on the A583 bypass John Antony Flitcroft suffered an acute cardiac event and lost control of his motor vehicle colliding with a tree resulting in multiple injuries.

“The conclusion is one of accidental death.”
