DOLPHINS have been spotted off the coast of Blackpool.

Conservationists said they were delighted to see a variety of mammals while on a watch from the Disco Ball at New South Promenade on Sunday afternoon.

A porpoise and seal were also spotted just a couple of hundred yards offshore.

Staff from the nearby Solaris Centre said a large shoal of fish is attracting a lot of birds as well as the sea creatures.

Dave McGrath, sustainability manager at the centre, added: “The dolphin watch was a huge success with 15 people turning up.

“There is a large shoal of fish offshore and we saw at least one dolphin although a bit distant.”

A grey seal was also spotted offshore on Monday morning. The sightings add to a growing list being compiled by staff at the Solaris Centre.

Six bottle-nosed dolphins were spotted off the coast in July and porpoises are often seen.

The information gathered is used to encourage conservation work along the coastline.
