Workmen weigh in

Slimming leader Cheryl Smith's heavyweight problem of getting her class equipment across a town centre construction site has been lifted by the well-mannered workmen on the site.

Unable to see a lady in distress, the men have muscled in to help Cheryl and her determined band of slimmers carry her gear from her car into class at St John's Church - sidestepping the work going on to turn the area around the parish church into a pedestrianised plaza.

" It has really shown me about how positive people can be and how they can pull together together in the midst of absolute chaos., " said Cheryl

"The area around St John's Church in Blackpool has been chaotic in the last few months.

"I run my class there every Thursday morning and fully expected the numbers to drop off because of the difficulty in reaching the church, but my members have continued to come through thick and thin.

"When the car park at the rear was dug up and I needed to get my stock for my class and my shop through the back door everyone ,including the workmen on site, pulled together and helped me lug scales, record cards, chocolate bars, sale stock across a car park which resembled and assault course.

"When the class ended they have helped to get it back in the car again," said Cheryl, of Toulbrick, near Hambleton.

"The staff at the church have also been marvellous. Their working conditions are not great either, but they remain cheery and helpful to everyone."

Cheryl had braced herself for a membership slump when she saw the full extent of the revamp around the church, but her members have put up with the inconvenience determined not miss their class.

"My meetings have been really busy in spite of not being able to have posters outside to tell people where to come - they have just found us!

"There have been fantastic weight losses some weeks, it must be due to the hike to get to us!"

"I really would like to thank everyone for tremendous support and we know the area will be fab when it's finished and well worth the temporary inconvenience."

Cheryl has been running the group at St John's since becoming a WW leader in November last year.

"It changed my life when I lost two and half stone, going down from a size 18 to a size 10/12 and I wanted everyone to feel like I do - fantastic."
