Don’t try this at home, kids

FIRE eating, escapology, sawing limbs off, piercing bodily bits, exploding (pretend) budgies, levitating the missus ... it’s all in the CV (that’s conjurer’s vitae) of Blackpool magician Derek Lever, organiser of the three day Blackpool Magicians’ Convention which starts tomorrow.

File picture, dated February 17, 1999, American singer Whitney Houston makes a rare appearance for her fans at the HMV store in Oxford Circus, London. PRESS ASSOCIATION Photo. Issue date: Sunday February 12, 2012. The American singer and actress, who was one of the world's best-selling artists in the 1980s and 1990s, has died, aged 48. See PA story SHOWBIZ Houston. Iconic diva few could imitate

IT speaks volumes of Whitney Houston that, while many of the fame and fortune chasers auditioning for their big break in The X Factor or Britain’s Got Talent – including right here in Blackpool – try to sing like her, very few succeed. And most slaughter the songs she made her own – which Dolly Parton penned and sang for a friend: I Will Always Love You.

A matter of civic pride

Griff Rhys Jones is busy, busy, busy. That’s how he likes it. When he gets time to think of it. Which isn’t now. Right now he’s preparing to put a bit of civic pride back into Preston – via a workshop there this afternoon – and then heading off to a big black tie do in Blackpool tonight, at arguably the most surreal setting the Winter Gardens has to offer – the Spanish Hall.
