BOSSES at Blackpool Transport have vowed to investigate after a large lump of asphalt was thrown at a moving tram.

This was what left of the slab of asphalt which shattered into scores of pieces when it was thrown at the vehicle as it passed through Fleetwood.

The incident happened just after 6pm on Saturday between the Lindel Road and Heathfield Road stops in Fleetwood.

The tram did not stop following the incident and continued on to Starr Gate as scheduled.

Onboard the tram was The Gazette’s football writer Rob Stocks.

He said: “The tram was accelerating away from the stop when all of a sudden there was a huge thud, followed by the sound of something being scattered all over the floor.

“At first I thought it was shattered glass but I looked up and saw there were pieces of asphalt all over the floor.

“I’d felt something tap me on the leg so I looked under my seat and found a lump of it, still intact.

“It had flown straight in through the open window - the rest looked like it had broken apart on impact.

“If that window hadn’t been open I’m sure I would have ended up showered in glass and had anybody got in the way of that missile they could really have been hurt.”

Blackpool Transport said it was investigating the incident.
