A doctor has told a court his patient is too fat to be sentenced by a court.
Justice must wait to see if 58-year-old Rita Astbury can lose enough weight to get out of bed and stand in the dock.
Astbury, of Milbourne Street, Blackpool, was found guilty in her absence of knowingly allowing a child to play truant from school.
Yesterday, a certificate was read out to Blackpool magistrates from her GP.
Its said: “I understand she has been unable to attend court which was due to an exacerbation of osteoarthritis. She is morbidly obese and the pain caused is sufficient for her to be put on morphine liquids.”
The note said the woman was waiting for a significant weight reduction before she can have hip surgery.
Magistrates agreed to further adjourn the case against Astbury.
