A MAN grabbed his girlfriend’s jaw and clamped it closed in a Valentine’s Day row.

Mark Burgess said his fiancee had been rowing with him for hours about money and he could not stand it any longer.

Burgess was due to marry the woman in June but now did not even know whether he would be welcome back home, Blackpool magistrates were told.

Unemployed Burgess, 41, of Bowland Crescent, Grange Park, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to assault.

Burgess grabbed hold of his fiancee’s jaw, causing redness and a scratch. When he let go she fled. The police were alerted and Burgess was arrested.

Ashley Barnes, prosecuting, said: “He said she was shouting and he attempted to shut her mouth.”

Peter Manning, defending, told magistrates: “He says his partner had been berating him for hours until he felt he could not stand it any more and he had to shut her up by getting hold of her jaw.

Burgess was given a 12 months conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs.
