A woman ambushed by a gang of masked raiders on a Blackpool car park bravely tried to fight back - just minutes after they targeted a jewellers.
The 57-year-old victim was walking through King Street car park, central Blackpool, on Monday afternoon when she was approached by three men who pushed her over and grabbed her handbag.
All the men had their faces covered.
They ran away with her handbag, the strap of which snapped when she was pushed to the ground, which contained an LG mobile phone, £20 cash, house keys and personal items.
But the victim’s phone was dropped by one of the raiders who then had to tussle with the brave woman who fought back.
The mugging took place at around 4.20pm in the car park close to the junction of Cookson Street and Charles Street.
Minutes before, the same three men attempted to smash a window at Carrington’s Jewellers, on Topping Street, with a metal bar.
Det Sgt Chris Sanderson, of Blackpool CID, said: “The victim hasn’t got any serious injuries but she’s obviously been left quite shaken by it.”
Carrington’s manager Vici Moran said: “There were three of them, they ran at the window twice. I went out and started shouting at them and they just shouted back. They weren’t intimidating but they were obviously trying to be.
“It was quite shocking really, it was like broad daylight.”
Two of the men are described as being white and slim build.
One of the men is around 6ft tall and wearing a black track suit and the other 5ft 5ins and dressed in a light tracksuit.
Police believe the same three men may have been drinking at the Hop Inn pub on King Street and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Det Sgt Sanderson added: “It’s unusual for people to commit this type of offence at that time of day.
Our investigation is continuing and I would appeal to anybody that knows who these men are or who witnessed these incidents to contact police.”
Two men, aged 23 and 26 from Blackpool, were arrested yesterday in connection with the robbery.
A 28-year-old man of King Street, Blackpool, has been charged with robbery and criminal damage.
He appeared before Blackpool Magistrates Court on Wednesday and will appear at Crown Court next month.
