Blackpool Magistrates' Court

A visitor who fell off the wagon because the weather in Blackpool was so hot grabbed his girlfriend by the throat and tried to strangle her.

Darren Potts also broke a garden bench during the fracas outside the Valdene Hotel, Cocker Street.

Potts, 40, of Jervis Street, Stoke-on-Trent, pleaded guilty to assault and causing damage.

He was bailed for pre-sentence reports, and will be sentenced later at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said the couple were in holiday in the resort. On July 23, Potts’ girlfriend said he had drunk about 18 cans of cider. They had a row, and Potts grabbed her throat. When interviewed Potts said he had not had a drink for months, but because the weather was hot he described himself as “crashing”.

Steven Townley, defending, said there had been no previous history of domestic violence.
