UPDATE: Teen charged after alleged assault leaves man critical with head injury

A teenage boy has been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent after an alleged incident in Blackpool on Saturday afternoon left a 47-year-old man with significant head injuries.

The incident happened at around 2.30pm outside the Costcutters shop on Exchange Street.

The victim was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital for treatment for a serious head injury and remains in a critical condition.

Police say they want to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw the victim in the moments prior to it happening.

It is believed that shortly before the assault the victim had been inside the Costcutters shop and had also used a telephone kiosk on Exchange Street close to its junction with Cocker Street.

Det Insp Andy Cribbin, of the Lancashire Police Force Major Investigation Team, said:

“The victim is in critical condition in hospital and we are determined to piece together exactly what occurred.

“Anybody with information is asked to make contact with us as soon as possible.”

A 16-year-old boy from Blackpool has been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.

He is due to appear at Blackpool Youth Court on Monday morning.Anybody with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log number 875 of May 20.
