DETECTIVES are quizzing a man and woman over the attempted abduction of a three-year-old girl in Blackpool.

The 18-year-old woman and 22-year-old man, who are both from Blackpool, were arrested on suspicion of attempted child abduction on Thursday.

It comes after reports two people tried to snatch a young girl from outside the Salad Bowl greengrocers on Topping Street in central Blackpool, where she was walking with her grandmother.

The frightening incident happened at around 2.20pm on Tuesday when the pair approached the youngster and began speaking to her.

The woman then tried to grab the child by the hand before the girl’s grandmother intervened.

The pair then fled the scene.

Police released CCTV images of two people they wanted to question in relation to the incident yesterday and urged members of the public to contact them with information.

Det Insp Becky Smith, leading the investigation for Blackpool CID, said she was pleased with the response from the public.

She said: “We have had people coming forward with sightings of them in the town centre on Tuesday.

“It seems it has been a result of the appeal in The Gazette - we are grateful to the people who have contacted us with information.

“If anyone else has any information, I would urge them to get in touch.

“The family of the girl are understandably shaken but glad that it was unsuccessful and the girl is fine.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Blackpool CID on (01253) 607240 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
