TWO men accused of staging an illegal protest at the top of Blackpool Tower have appeared in court.

Robert Basto, 63, of Blackborough Road, Reigate, Surrey and Robert Monaghan, 24, of Lansdowne Place, Hove, Sussex are accused of trespassing on the 518ft tall tower on August 6 this year.

They are then alleged to have placed a giant poster protesting against the drilling or ‘fracking’ for shale gas on the Fylde coast.

The two men are accused under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act with trespassing on The Tower with the intention of obstructing or disrupting work going on there.

Basto and Monaghan both entered not guilty pleas.

Both were both bailed pending trial which will take place at Fleetwood Magistrates Court in September.

They were bailed subject to one restriction- they cannot enter Lancashire apart from court hearing.
