A road was closed for a number of hours after a car smashed into a lamppost and burst into flames.

Firefighters, police, and paramedics were called to Blackpool Road in Carleton following the crash, which happened shortly before 10pm on Sunday.

Some witnesses reported seeing four people climb out the black Vauxhall Corsa, while others said they only saw three, at least one of which ran off.

Pictures taken at the scene by firefighters from Bispham and Blackpool stations show the badly damaged hatchback engulfed by fire with a knocked over lamppost lying on its roof.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue spokesman added: "A car hit a telegraph pole and the driver was seen to leave the scene. The car was on fire and two fire engines and crews, from Bispham and Blackpool, were sent to the incident. Firefighters used two hose-reel jets to extinguish the fire."

They battled the blaze until 11.20pm as buses and other traffic was diverted.

A spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said a 33-year-old man was held on suspicion of drink or drug driving and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and taking a vehicle a vehicle with the owner’s consent, and a 26-year-old man was held on suspicion of stealing a motor vehicle.

All are from Fleetwood and were in custody this morning. Nobody was seriously hurt in the crash.
