A thief who fought viciously with shop workers when he was caught stealing has been jailed.
Richard O’Toole punched, spat and bit at a manager and security guard after being taken into the store’s back office.
O’Toole, the former manager of a working men’s club, 42, of Burlington Road, South Shore, pleaded guilty to two assaults, theft and breaching two suspended prison sentences.
He was sentenced to 329 days jail by Blackpool magistrates.
Adrian Hollamby, prosecuting, said O’Toole was caught stealing goods valued at £28 from Tesco, Lytham Road, Blackpool on August 20.
After being taken back into the shop he punched the manager in the face and repeatedly battered the security officer round the head, before spitting in his face and biting him on the hand.
At the time of the offences he was on suspended prison sentences for assault and harassment.
Trevor Colebourne, defending, said O’Toole had been extremely drunk when he went into the shop and could not remember stealing the goods.
O’Toole said he was grabbed and then reacted in an unfortunate way.
In the melee O’Toole had a capped tooth punched out.
O’Toole had once had a good job as a precision engineer, but when he changed jobs to become a club manager he started to struggle with alcohol problems.
