A thief was slammed as ‘impertinent’ by a judge when he stole straight after being set free from custody at court.

Anthony Morris was released on a curfew by magistrates – and went straight out and stole a handbag from TK Maxx at 11am on October 15. He said the bag was a present for his girlfriend to apologise for getting arrested.

It is the most ridiculous motive for a theft I have ever heard of

Morris, 27, of Oxford Road, Marton, pleaded guilty to theft. He was sentenced to 84 days’ imprisonment suspended for 12 months and ordered to pay a £150 court charge with £80 victims’ surcharge by District Judge Jeff Brailsford sitting at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.

The judge described the theft as ‘impertinent and flagrant’ and added: “It is the most ridiculous motive for a theft I have ever heard of.”
