A ST ANNES man stole a pack of sandwiches after drinking eight cans of lager and a small bottle of vodka.

Robert Wilson, 35, of Coniston Avenue, pleaded guilty to theft from the Pier Cafe.

He was fined £65 with £4.50 compensation and £20 victims’ surcharge but could not pay immediately so Blackpool magistrates ruled time he had already spent in custody would serve instead of the financial penalties.

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said staff at the Pier Cafe, St Annes, saw Wilson heading towards a locked door at the back of the cafe on February 28 about 2.30pm.

The manager tracked Wilson down outside and the defendant offered to pay £2 towards the sandwich but said he had to go to the bank.

When interviewed Wilson said he remembered sitting on St Annes Promenade reading a newspaper, but not going into the cafe.

Mitch Sarangi, defending, said Wilson had an alcohol addiction.
