Police are investigating after footage captured by camera crews in Blackpool town centre appears to show a police officer striking a man as he is arrested.
The footage was captured by crews for BBC North West Tonight as reporters looked into the late night drinking culture in the resort.
The resort’s night-time economy and the issues it can create for police, hospitals and the community have been in the spotlight for some time ahead of proposals to introduce at Early Morning Restriction Order (EMRO) banning the sale of alcohol after 3am.
Now police have said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the image.
And the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has also been made aware of the footage.
A spokesman for Lancashire Constabulary said: “We are grateful to BBC North West Tonight for making us aware of the footage.
“We can confirm we have made the IPCC aware of the matter, however we are investigating the circumstances.”
A spokesman for the IPCC said: “We’re not investigating but we are aware and awaiting further details.”
