Phone App tracks down thief

Blackpool Magistrates Court

Blackpool Magistrates Court

A THIEF was foiled after stealing a DJ’s phone in a bar – by the mobile phone itself.

Michael Murphy, 30, of Cookson Street, took the device from the man, who went on to use a ‘Find My Phone’ application to trace it.

The thief immediately handed the phone back to its owner when confronted.

Murphy, who had previously served six months in prison for a different offence, pleaded guilty to theft when he appeared before Blackpool magistrates.

Kathryn Jamieson-Sinclair, defending, told the hearing: “It was a very quiet night in the bar and the phone had been on the bar for 30 minutes when he foolishly decided to take it for himself.

“He has only been out of prison for six months and knows how close he is to going back there.”

Murphy was given an 18 month conditional discharge.
