Patrols to snap bad drivers on camera

Lollipop patrols will be handed body cameras to catch irresponsible drivers.

LOLLIPOP patrols are set to turn big brother on Blackpool’s drivers – and punish those caught flouting the law.

School crossing patrols are set to be handed new body cameras which will catch on film irresponsible drivers who fail to stop and let pupils cross the road.

The new initiative is being launched by Blackpool Council, and Coun Fred Jackson, (right), cabinet member for streets and transport, said: “We’ve had a number of our school crossing patrols who have been left worried by drivers who have ignored the signal to stop and driven on past.

“There are laws in place that mean drivers should stop when a school crossing patrol signals. To ignore that signal is not only illegal – it is a stupid risk to people’s safety.”

The police said the camera evidence would support any prosecutions.

The scheme will begin in the next few weeks at South Park Drive and Preston Old Road, and is then expected to expand.
