A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering the father of missing Blackpool schoolgirl Paige Chivers.
Frank Chivers, 49, died on Sunday after reports he had collapsed outside his home at Walter Robinson Court, Layton.
Police today confirmed they believe Mr Chivers was assaulted shortly before his death.
A 43-year-old man from Blackpool was this morning arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody being questioned by officers.
A post mortem examination will now take place to establish the cause of Mr Chivers’ death.
Det Supt Paul Withers, of Lancashire Police’s Major Investigation Team, said: “The exact circumstances surrounding Frank’s death are still unclear at this stage but we believe he may have been subjected to an assault which has caused him to collapse within his home.
“I would appeal to anybody that may have witnessed this assault or with any information that could assist police with our inquiry to come forward.
“I’d also like to make a direct appeal to friends and associates of Frank who may have information concerning what took place in his flat that afternoon and would assure them that any information given will be treated in confidence.”
Mr Chivers’ daughter Paige, 15, disappeared in August 2007.
Despite a massive police investigation the former Montgomery High School pupil has never been found.
Her disappearance is being treated as a murder investigation.
