A female shop assistant fought off a machete wielding thief with a mop and a bottle of vodka.
Police said the brave shop assistant at the Co-op on Central Drive in Blackpool refused to give into the thief’s demands for cash even when he threatened to stab her with the machete and kitchen knife he was armed with.
Instead, while she was just inches away from the blade of the knives she used a mop and a bottle of vodka to fight off the man, protecting herself and her female colleague.
Catching the hooded robber by surprise she was then able to raise the alarm shortly after 10.30pm on Saturday.
The thief, thought to be around 28-years-old, was forced to flee the store empty handed.
Det Con Barron Moseley, of Blackpool CID, said: “I would like to commend staff at the store for keeping calm in what can only be described as a traumatic experience.
“They were extremely brave and stayed calm in such a harrowing experience and their actions have prevented them or any customers from being injured or worse.
“This is a very disturbing crime that has happened in a very busy area of Blackpool. CCTV footage of the incident shows two female customers, one elderly, fleeing from the store for their own safety.
“I am keen to speak to these women as they may be able to assist in the investigation.
“I would also urge anyone who recognises the man or who was in the area at that time to call us on 101.”
A spokesman for Co-op said the staff were left “very shaken” by the incident but they had been unharmed.
