A man went off the rails when his father died suddenly and his mother then tried to commit suicide.

Richard Ryder turned to drugs and when his habit spiralled out of control he committed crime.

Ryder, 52, of Cavendish Road, Bispham, pleaded guilty to theft.

Jim Mowbray, prosecuting, said a staff member at Lidl in Cleveleys, detained Ryder on September 19 after seeing him steal two ratchet sets valued at £39.

Jessica Partington, defending, said Ryder, was greatly affected when his dad died and mum became ill.

Ryder was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay a £150 court charge with £35 costs plus £15 victims’ surcharge by magistrates.
