Police are appealing for witnesses after a man tried to steal a lanyard from a woman’s neck after asking her for a cigarette.

The victim, a woman in her early 40s, was walking home and had reached the junction of Grizedale Road and Seathwaite Avenue, Blackpool, when she was approached by the man.

He asked her for a cigarette and when she explained she had none he leaned forward and grabbed at the lanyard she was wearing which contained her work ID badge.

He pulled at the lanyard, ripping it from her neck but the woman was able to hit the man. He dropped the lanyard and she was able to pick it up and run away.

The incident happened at 6.30pm last Monday, but details were only released by police yesterday.
