A man with a heart condition who did not usually drink was found over the limit after being told his grandmother had cancer.
Neil Smith, 27, of Ashfield Road, Bispham, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.
He was banned from driving for 12 months and fined £110 with £45 costs plus £20 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.
Philip Potter, prosecuting, said police saw Smith driving a Citroen on North Drive without lights on October 31 at 12.35am.
At first Smith did not stop for police but when the officer put on the vehicle’s sirens he halted.
Kathryn Jamieson-Sinclair, defending, said her client had a heart complaint which he needed specialist surgery for and he rarely drank.
He and his partner had argued and he drank three to four lagers.
