A man brandished a knife at his wife of 23 years during an argument on Halloween, a court was told.

David Wickenden grabbed her in a headlock and punched her in the face before he waved the knife.

He says at no point did he move towards her or strike at her with the knife

His wife managed to disarm him and locked herself in the bathroom to call the police while he tried to batter the door down.

Wickenden, 58, of Granville Avenue, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to assault.

Wickenden said he had been drinking.

Martin Hillson, defending, said the couple had known each other for 40 years and been married for 23 years. Wickenden had no previous convictions.

Mr Hillson added: “He says at no point did he move towards her or strike at her with the knife.”

Wickenden was bailed for pre-sentence reports by Blackpool magistrates. He must not enter Blackpool or contact his wife.
