Man jailed for savings theft

Liam Davis

Liam Davis

A MAN has been jailed after robbing a pensioner of a Quality Street tin containing his life-savings.

Liam Davis, 23, from Penrose Avenue, Marton, thought the tin contained chocolates and tried to flog it for £5 - before opening it and discovering £26,000.

Davis and his 17-year-old accomplice, Arron Scott, of no fixed abode, had swiped the tin from the 75-year-old victim as he sat in Blackpool’s Coral Island arcade.

Lancaster Crown Court heard today the theft had been “opportunistic” - but both men had swiped fistfuls of the £50 and £20 notes from inside the tin before dumping it, with £8,000 left inside.

Although when he was arrested Davis did return all £11,000 of the cash he said he took - bar £20 - Judge Tony Lancaster said he had no choice but to jail him.

Davis was sentenced to four months in prison and Scott will be sentenced next month.
