A man who stabbed a defenceless man to death in his Blackpool flat has today been jailed for life.

Mark Ball, 25, must serve a minimum term of more than 16 years before he can even be considered for possible release.

His victim, Marc Davis, 41, was stabbed four times in the chest - with a large kitchen knife.

Preston Crown Court heard the knife pierced his heart in the living room of his home in Alexandra Road, South Shore.

Ball, who had been living at the Streetlife night shelter, had denied the murder which occurred in October 2012.

He claimed he didn’t know how Mr Davis came to suffer his wounds and had taken alcohol and Valium, the court heard.

Justice Holroyde, the judge passing sentence, said no obvious motive for the killing had emerged, but Mr Davis had posed Ball no threat and done him no harm.

The judge’s sentencing remarks were interrupted at one stage by the defendant swearing and storming out of the dock.
