A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire in a block of flats blocked an escape route.

Fire crews were called out to a blaze at a property on High Street, Blackpool, at 11.44pm last night.

Three men, all in their 20s, were able to escape the ground and first floors flats unharmed after fire alarms alerted them to the flames.

It is believed curtains on the hallway of the second floor of the building had been set on fire deliberately.

Andrew Jones, crew manager at Blackpool fire station, said: “The fire is being treated as suspicious.

“Curtains were set on fire in the hallway, blocking the way, but nobody was in the second floor flat.”

Three fire engines attended the fire, where four fire fighter entered the block to ensure all occupants were out and to tackle the blaze.

Occupants of the second floor flat were out at the time.

Police and fire crews are now investigating the cause of the fire.
